“Communing with Ancients Through Pastels,” is all about old and new coming together in conversation. It is a mixed media collage of plaster, paper, photo paper, foil, and finally acrylic. Not only do I love it for the deep, rich, reflective gold, hot pinks, purple, and bright blues, sitting against black, but I love the ancient symbols playing against the vivid colors.
To me the piece feels like a reminder of the natural societal and human cycles, birth and rebirth, shared memory, forgetting and remembering again. I think it speaks to thinking of what has come before us and imploring us to understand our pasts and asking us to be better versions of the best things of those pasts. I think it also speaks to the horrors and sacrifices we inflict on one another and how difficult is is to to keep all of this going. It is at the exhibition.
