Iconic Women Artists Deserve A Special Place In The History Books

From the Publisher:

Historically, major women artists have been excluded from the mainstream art canon. Aligned with the resurgence of feminism in pop culture, Broad Strokes offers an entertaining corrective to that omission. Art historian Bridget Quinn delves into the lives and careers of 15 brilliant female artists in text that’s smart, feisty, educational, and an enjoyable read. Replete with beautiful reproductions of the artists’ works and contemporary portraits of each artist by renowned illustrator Lisa Congdon, this is art history from 1600 to the present day for the modern art lover, reader, and feminist. #MixedMedia Tribute #Portrait #WaterColor & Acrylic

This one is a test subject. I want to get back into doing some portraiture. I haven’t done any portraits since I was in school, so my skills for capturing human subtlety is somewhat atrophied. I wanted to start with someone I liked, but who was not a personal favorite of mine or a direct inspiration for me. I certainly didn’t want to do someone I knew well. I had created this watercolor background around the time of David Bowie’s death and it reminded me of Bowie.

It makes me think of a nebula. Vast. Alien. Enigmatic. Continue reading “#MixedMedia Tribute #Portrait #WaterColor & Acrylic”

More Finished #Collage #Art!

An eclectic mix of different things. The first is a small acrylic painting. I’m fond of this one. The second is a set, which is acrylic and collage with both paper and tissue paper. The third is a mixed media collage; I was trying to draw out whimsy, which is really hard for me. The fourth is a paper collage with acrylic paint as a background and as accent. I’m partial to this one too. The fifth is crazy piece I was trying to convey anger and frustration. Fortunately, a fair amount of sadness comes through, which makes it even more haunting.

Four Recently Completed #MixedMedia #Paintings

We love the Marx Brothers and Groucho is Stan’s favorite of the bunch. This painting is modeled after a book cover. I played up the art deco elements, because we so love that style. I imagine at some point I’ll make one of Harpo. I just think he is grand!
